Pulp Operation, Westport Island, 1957
Contributed by Westport Island History CommitteeDescription
Edwin Cromwell owned a sawmill on Westport Island. He was the contractor for a logging operation on MacMahan Island, and is shown guiding a pulp log up the loader.
Cromwell harvested the pulp wood from MacMahan Island, located off the south end of Westport Island. He floated the wood over Goose Rock Passage to Westport Island in a boom, and loaded it onto the trucks of William T. Wright from Woolwich with a loader. Pejepscot Paper Company owned the loader, and their forester, Lin Rideout, supervised the operation.
